The guitarist and drummer from FEET lean back into their seats getting comfy as Ben comments on how he joined the band. “It was through the label nice one. They had signed a previous band of mine and they were talking to FEET and they had just let go of their drummer and were about to record an album and somehow our paths crossed.” They both giggle for a moment as they reminisce before Ben further explains, “I just went down to Portsmouth had a little like trial shift and yeah it seemed to kind of work. But I don’t know if I was accepted more because of the pressure of time or because I was actually good.”
Slight confusion races across both of their faces when they are asked whether they think FEETS music falls into any particular genre. “Alternative music these days” Ben begins. “Wide umbrella term but it’s the best way to describe it and I try to avoid the word indie.” Harry, one of the bands guitarists, nods his head in agreement and continues Bens’s point. “It makes you think of bands like the Kooks and the Wombats and that’s not what we are like really.”
Recently, FEET have been experiencing life on tour once again supporting inhaler on their UK and Ireland tour. “I think it takes longer to adjust to normal life again afterwards because tour life is so chaotic.” Harry expresses. Ben then chimes in and elaborates, “it’s like an old friend. when you see them again after a long time you revert right back to how you were before. Really excited and full of energy and then when you come home it’s like ugh, horrible”.
“South America and Ally Pally” Ben announces with no hesitation when asked where their ideal show would be. He then pauses to think before finalising his answer “somewhere warm.” Harry contributes by agreeing that he would love to play Alexandra Palace as the band has lived in view of it for three years now. “We used to joke we would be able to just walk there to play our show.”
I asked the pair whether they had any advice for those looking to start a band and in a flash Harry mutters “Don’t choose a silly name.” Both laugh briefly before Ben adds to his advice by saying you can only do it “because you love it” and for “no other reason”. He believes there is hard points but “as soon as it doesn’t become fun there’s just not much point in doing it.”
The band has had a slight pause since releasing their last album in 2019 however, they assure us there is more coming soon. “Yeah, album two is on the way” states Ben with such eagerness, you can tell he’s thrilled. Furthermore, Harry clarifies their future tour plans; “we can choose the next path of tour, and everything falls into place once the album is done.” With already so much to look forward too Ben adds one last point to ensure it’s understood FEET has big things coming this year. “We want to keep the momentum up so yeah were going to be less stagnant, a lot more active.”
Finally, Harry chuckles as he explains the comical story of how the band’s name was decided. “Many moons ago we had a different guitar player who suggested we call the band the talking heads.” Obviously, they laughed at him as that’s already a very well-known band. “He said oh you just want to call it something stupid like Feet. So, we just went with that just to wind him up.”
